Janet Mason is a Nova Scotia artist whose family has been part of Lunenburg from its founding in 1753.
Since 1976, she's dedicated her work to Nova Scotia landscapes, seascapes and flora using oil, acrylics and watercolours.
Janet is inspired by memories of her youth. She paints her beloved Stonehurst, Blue Rocks, Lunenburg and surrounding areas, from the heart. The advice of her father, a fisherman for 51 years, helped her master the moods of the sea.
Janet has attended workshops given by watercolour artist June Olsen, Joy Laking, Jack Reid (CSPWC) and marine oil painter Graham "Buzz" Baker.
To date, she's had four solo shows and 20 group shows. Her work is in private collections throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.
I have enjoyed painting for over 30 years and my work has undergone many changes, the most significant being color. As my technique progressed, I used much more vivid color than in earlier years.
I am a great fan of realism; and love to paint the different atmospheric changes we enjoy here in Nova Scotia. It is inspiring to paint fog, cloud formations and our fantastic sunrises and sunsets.
Painting the sea is my forté. To study the restless waves as they break against the rocks, then present them on canvas, brings me a sense of fulfillment. I strive to feel their movement with each brush stroke.
Flowers are important to me as well. To capture their beauty by painting the delicate petals and foliage in vivid and pastel colors, brings me closer to the spirit within.
